Finding community and belonging as an international student at Brock University

-Oyindamola Azeez, Brock University

I chose to study at Brock University because it is in a quiet and small city with few distractions. As an international student, I thought that was gonna be enough for me but Brock made me see beyond the lights. Not only do I face my studies but I get involved in school and in the community. Here are some way that I have had success finding community and belonging as an international student at Brock University.

It was a bit challenging at first because the system of learning is really different from my country. Here we have 50 minute lectures, 3 hour laboratories, 12 hours of tutorials and seminars. Here I must study for knowledge and understanding and application to real life situations, not just cram for examination. I also have to live on my own! It is my first time living without family so it was a bit weird at first but well here I am :) enjoying my experience and building myself for the future. I really love the fact that you get to meet one on one with the lecturers because you don’t get that everywhere in my country.

Another challenge of mine was finding a place to worship God (Church), but not only did I find a bible believing church, they make me feel at home and are like family to me. Making friends was a bit tough because I’m really quiet and shy but I did make friends eventually. The time change in November was fun but from winter to spring wasn’t in any way funny
because I lost an hour of sleep but you know what I do prefer daylight savings.

I love my school a lot, its really beautiful and conducive for learning. The buildings are all connected and in the winter when switching classrooms you keep warm except when you leave the campus. ;). There are lots of clubs to join to make the most of one’s experience. The weather changes in Canada are amazing!! Back in Nigeria, its basically warm throughout the year, we have rain sometimes and it gets dry as well.

Aside from residence dining, we have a market that serves and sells different foods. We also have a union station that has variety of food services; subway, flavours, juice boosters, Asian kitchen and so many others. And of course we have Tim Hortons in school and across school. We also have McDonalds, pizza shops and others on the other side. I’m a big fan of homemade food but these places have foods that taste great.

For students looking forward to studying in Canada, its really a great place with much to gain and experience. I would say you should know the main reason for coming which is to study and don’t get into the wrong company. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a little fun once in a while to get a break from school. Its also very fantastic to get involved but you must manage your time efficiently. Mingle with course mates and lecturers as well. I wish you the very best.

Generally, my time in Canada has been really wonderful, full of  tremendous experiences and I’m looking forward to more.
