Studying in Canada was the greatest experience I have ever accomplished in my academic career. It was my first international travel outside of my own country of Brazil. Canada offers great institutions with qualified professionals to help international students go through the learning process. Furthermore, its culture and biodiversity are incredibly interesting. However, besides all the fascination of going to Canada, studying in another country means leaving your comfort zone and being opened to new ideas and challenges. Here are 4 piece of advice for studying in Canada as you adapt to the new country, culture and develop your skills.
Language:
The language might be a big challenge. When I arrived in Canada, I knew just basic English which I was able to improve through studying with dedication and focus. Making friends and being interested in the culture of the place you are make the difference on your learning process. For example, Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario, has great professors, and they are very committed to help you go throughout all difficulties of the language and make you succeed.
Weather:
Usually, we don’t have sub-zero temperatures in Brazil, and we don’t have clothes for extreme temperatures such as: coats, toque and gloves. When you go to Canada, it’s important to know what the range of temperature is for the region where you are going to stay. “Usually the temperature goes from -40º C to +30º C changing according to each season.”(World Weather & Climate Information, 2016). In Thunder Bay, we had temperatures below 45º C during the winter and plus 31º C during the summer, so buying appropriate clothes is very important.
Your surroundings:
Not to mention, being familiar with the campus and your educational institution is crucial. Normally, universities and colleges have staff to help international students with places to stay, health insurance, transportation and other information while you are in Canada. Make sure you know all these professionals and don’t be afraid to ask for help or pose questions. They have information about, entertainment activities during your academic semester, tutoring, and can help you to find all the support you might need.
Your support network:
Equally important is the support from your family and friends. Being away from home is never easy, and the support from your loved ones is fundamental to your success while studying in Canada. I’m sure your family will be proud of you and your accomplishments, so make sure to always share with them your achievements, challenges and fears. Similarly, the friends you make during your exchange program become part of your family, and they also can help you and give good advice to your safety and well-being. You will be thankful when you go home and remember all the adventures you all took together.
To sum up, you will see the world with new eyes. Studying in Canada can be a great and memorable experience if you count on all supports the country has to offer to you, international student. Learning or improving a new language, making new friends, and living in another country with weather totally different was very enriching to my life. While in Canada, I could try new tastes and aromas, improve my English skills, travel to amazing places and open my mind to think outside the box.
