Funding your studies in Canada: What you need to know about tuition, living expenses and other fees

I had many different reasons for choosing to study in Canada. For me a Canadian education signified adventure and a step towards achieving long-term career goals. Furthermore, in Canada I knew that I would meet international students from all over the world, and have the opportunity to develop my own personality. While the benefits to studying in Canada are apparent, sometimes finding a way to fund your studies in Canada is not.

“Life in Canada can be very different from your home country. There will be new and exciting challenges every day, but this is why you chose to study abroad, isn’t it?”

I cannot stress enough the importance of doing your research on tuition fees, living costs and other expenses before coming to Canada.

Here are my tips for you to consider on tuition, living expenses and other fees in Canada:

Tuition:
Once you choose your Canadian institution , visit their website to find out what your tuition in Canada will be. Make sure that as an international student, you find the international student fees and not the Canadian student fees as they are different.

Application fee:
Each institution will charge a fee to apply for their program. Application fees may range from 60.00CAD to 150.00CAD depending on the institution.

Other study costs:
You may need to buy textbooks for your courses. I suggest checking for electronic versions of your textbooks online to save money.

Student fees:
At most of the educational institutions in Canada, students pay fees for services that support them during study: student union fees, travel card, etc. Make sure you check with the admission office of your desired institution to see what additional fees you will be required to pay.

Health Insurance:
Remember that health insurance policies for international students vary and most likely you will need to cover a percentage of your medical expenses, even with a plan. Make sure you know what is covered before making an insurance claim so that you aren’t surprised later!

Dining and groceries:
Your average monthly cost for food can be 250CAD to 500CAD depending on your lifestyle. If you eat out most of the time then you are likely to spend more.

Accommodation:
It is more convenient to stay close to your college or university campus. However, you need to apply well in advance if you choose to stay on campus or in an off-campus homestay program which can cost from $450.00 CAD to $800.00 CAD per month.

Life in Canada can be very different from your home country. Try to get involved with extra-curricular activities and be open to meeting new people. There will be new and exciting challenges every day, but this is why you chose to study abroad, isn’t it? I hope you enjoy your time in Canada and I wish you all the best.
